The New England Patriots poached a quarterback from an AFC rival Friday after the team had to place a cornerback on injured reserve. The Patriots have had two major storylines early this season—depth at the cornerback and quarterback positions.
The Patriots haven’t found a solid QB2 or QB3 behind Mac Jones. The Patriots tried adding Matt Corral to compete with Bailey Zappe for the QB2 job, but the team waived Corral after he had been placed on the exempt/left squad list. The Patriots were planning on adding Corral back, but the plans fell through.
Cornerback Jack Jones was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury before the regular season started. Then Marcus Jones suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2. Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Jones could be out potentially for the rest of the season with a torn labrum.
The New England Patriots poach a QB from the Cincinnati Bengals
According to Aaron Wilson with KPRS, the Patriots placed Marcus on injured reserve. With a spot on the 53-man roster open, the Patriots signed quarterback Will Grier off the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad.
The Carolina Panthers drafted Grier in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent time with the Dallas Cowboys the previous two seasons and this preseason before signing to the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad after training camp. Grier’s time in Dallas was up when the Cowboys traded for former San Francisco 49ers first-round pick Trey Lance.
The Bengals immediately signed a quarterback to their practice squad after the Patriots poached Grier.
Grier is a former West Virginia standout. He doesn’t have a lot of experience playing games in the NFL. Grier is 28/52 for 228 yards passing with four interceptions in his NFL career.
