The San Francisco 49ers have yet to find a trade partner for Jimmy Garoppolo. There have been rumors in recent days that Tampa Bay has interest in trading for the 30-year-old quarterback, but nothing has materialized up to now, leaving doubt when a trade will happen.
ESPN Comments on the Situation
However, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Seahawks are monitoring the situation. They also are potentially interested in making a trade with its division rival.
“A few executives I have spoken to believe the 49ers are a bit stuck here,” Fowler said. “I’m told internally they have discussed the possibility of Garoppolo playing for them. They have done their film work to see how he would fit.”
At this point, the 49ers may feel inclined to deal with anyone, even if that means trading Garoppolo to Seattle. It could make sense for the 49ers. They are trying to get rid of Garoppolo’s contract and put all of their focus into developing Trey Lance.
Should Seattle Trade for Jimmy Garoppolo?
Seattle is at a completely different spot in its franchise after trading Wilson to the Broncos earlier in the offseason. The Seahawks are now entering a full rebuild with Drew Lock and Geno Smith as the options for quarterback this upcoming season.
As limited as Garoppolo is, he is still a clear upgrade over the two current quarterbacks on Seattle’s roster. However, the Seahawks should avoid upgrading the quarterback position and embrace the full rebuild.
Trading for Garoppolo would make the Seahawks competent enough to possibly miss out on a top-five pick, and that would be a major mistake for an organization trying to find a future franchise quarterback.
The Upcoming Quarterback Class
The 2023 quarterback draft class offers a lot of promise with C.J Stroud and Bryce Young as the top touted signal callers in the draft. As the roster is currently constructed, Seattle has a great chance in finishing as a bottom-three team in the NFL. The Seahawks should move forward with Lock or Smith and let the season play out.
Pete Carroll may not want that, but the Seahawks have to think about the future and that starts with finding a franchise quarterback. Trading for Garoppolo would leave Seattle in no man’s land, possibly losing out on a top pick. Regardless, Seattle will be a top-10 pick at least, but could easily be slated in the top three if it holds off trading for the veteran quarterback.
Missing out on Stroud or Young would be disastrous for Seattle. There are a few other options at quarterback in the 2023 draft, such as Anthony Richardson, Tyler Van Dyke, and Will Lewis, but none of those players are as surefire as the Ohio State and Alabama quarterbacks. Seattle could propel their rebuild by tanking this season.
