The 2024 NFL draft has a lot of teams trying to improve their teams by trading up and we did not get the first draft day trade in the first round until the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings made a deal for the 10th and 11th picks. However, the New York Giants reportedly were searching for a quarterback and their proposed offer has been reported.
Senior NFL Reporter Albert Breer is reporting that the New York Giants attempted to make a trade with the New England Patriots for the third pick. The reported trade was the sixth pick and the Giants 2025 first-round pick in exchange for the third-round pick. However, New England declined the offer.
That would have been interesting as it appears that the Giants were interested in Drake Maye as only Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels were off the board before the third pick. Instead, the New York Giants did not trade and kept their sixth-overall pick and drafted wide receiver Malik Nabers out of LSU.
This is very interesting as it seems the Patriots were bought in on Drake Maye as the future of the franchise for their team. However, it appears more and more that the Giants are looking for an escape plan from Daniel Jones. Rich Eisen reported a few weeks ago that the team is ready to move on and they have an out in the contract after the 2024 season.
What does this proposed trade mean for the New York Giants in 2024?
Whether it be due to ineffectiveness, injury or wanting to start over at the quarterback position, the New York Giants seem ready to move on from Daniel Jones one year after signing him to a four-year, $160 million extension. It appears that the team wanted Drake Maye as they did not select a quarterback with their pick but Jones seems to not be the apple of this regime’s eye.
In his career, Daniel Jones is 1221-of-1900 (64.3%) for 12,512 yards with 62 touchdowns and 40 interceptions but also ran for more than 1,900 yards and 13 touchdowns. However, his turnovers have been an issue as well as health as he has committed 47 turnovers in 60 games and only played 60 games in five seasons.
With the Giants seemingly rebuilding and trying to get talent to be attractive for a quarterback next offseason, this has the potential to be a long season.
