After losing running back Antonio Gibson to the New England Patriots in free agency, the Washington Commanders have found a replacement and agreed to terms with Los Angeles Chargers star Austin Ekeler. The deal is set to be worth $11.43 million for a two-year span with a signing bonus of $3 million.
Los Angeles also acquired a new running back in Gus Edwards, who they signed toa $6.5 million dollar contract for two years. So, Ekeler has found a new home in Washington joining running backs Brian Robinson Jr and Chris Rodgriguez Jr.
Austin Ekeler Took Step Back in 2023 Campaign for Los Angeles Chargers
Ekeler, who took over as the lead back in 2021 for Los Angeles delivered back-to-back seasons of 1,500 plus scrimmage yards before struggling to find his rhythm in 2023. Where he took a step back only producing 628 rushing yards and an additional 436 as a pass catcher out of the backfield.
Ekeler will be heading into his 8th season in the NFL after going undrafted in 2017 and will be 29 years old going into next season. He will start a new chapter with a new team after spending the first 7 seasons of his career as a Charger.
Ekeler will Reunite with Washington Commanders Coordinator Anthony Lynn
Anthony Lynn, who was the Chargers head coach from 2017-2020 has been hired as Washington’s run game coordinator and running backs coach. While Ekeler has only played for the Chargers throughout his career, there is a familiar face in Lynn that could help ignite his production.
Ekeler reached his first 1,500-yard season from scrimmage under Lynn in 2019 and had his best season as a receiver. Catching 92 balls for 993 yards and 8 touchdowns while adding 557 yards on the ground.
