Washington addressed the defense by signing a pass rusher in free agency.
The Washington Commanders signed a defensive end.
Washington signed Dorance Armstrong to a 3-year deal with a maximum value of $45 million, reuniting with Dan Quinn.
Dorance Armstrong elevated his game when Dan Quinn was Dallas’s DC.
After seeing limited playing time in his first three seasons with Dallas, Armstrong’s playing time and productivity increased after they hired Quinn as their defensive coordinator in 2021.
Armstrong appeared in 13 games in 2021, recording 37 tackles, three for a loss, 12 QB hits, five sacks, and one pass deflection. He also had four tackles, one for a loss, one QB hit, and one pass deflection in one playoff game.
Armstrong appeared in 17 games in 2022, recording 33 tackles, ten for a loss, 16 QB hits, 8.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. He also had five tackles and two QB hits in two playoff games.
Armstrong appeared in 17 games in 2023, recording 38 tackles, seven for a loss, 12 QB hits, 7.5 sacks, and one pass deflection. He also had one tackle and one QB hit in one playoff game.
The impact of the signing.
The signing of Armstrong will positively impact the defense because he is a solid replacement for Chase Young and Montez Sweat, as the team traded both away during the NFL Trade Deadline.
Another reason why signing him will positively impact the defense is because Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne get help on the defensive line and aren’t expected to carry the defense anymore.
Finally, he can be a mentor for K.J. Henry.
