The New England Patriots have been making tons of moves as NFL free agency is now in full swing. After trading their first round quarterback Mac Jones just days earlier, the team is now set to sign a deal with Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson. Gibson will be a third down back and can be the pass catcher out of the backfield as the team already has Rhamondre Stevenson to be the lead back.
New England Patriots Agree To Deal With Antonio Gibson
The Patriots made a few notable cuts and Gibson is the first free agent the team will bring. The deal was reported by NFL insider Tom Pelissero, and he reported that Gibson will is set to sign a 3 year deal worth $11.25 million with New England. The running back is also set to get $5.3 million in fully guaranteed money.
While this is not one of the biggest moves of the day, it helps the team get better offensively. Having Gibson in the back field with Stevenson will allow for both to help each other. Stevenson is the featured back but Gibson has been an exceptional pass catcher out of the backfield.
In 61 career games with 32 starts, Gibson has rushed for 2,643 yards with 22 touchdowns. He’s also caught 172 passes for 1,283 yards with seven TDs.
New England Patriots Are In Full Rebuild
This team is now in a full rebuild, and after trading Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team is reported to almost certainly take a quarterback with their number 3 overall pick in this years draft. Having Gibson and Stevenson will be great for a rookie quarterback as their offense will rely on a great run game in the 2024 season.
Gibson will be the first of many players this team should bring in as they are in dire need of some receivers as well. Perhaps the Patriots will go after Calvin Ridley or even try to make a blockbuster trade for another elite receiver. Either way this is just the beginning for the Patriots free agency.
