The Washington Commanders are sitting at the bottom of the NFC East standings. With a possible third seed within the division still up for grabs, any ending is not likely to change the narrative of the season much. The season has been a disappointment. Many are already looking to alternate options at quarterback and head coach next year, but this year’s starting quarterback is focused on taking care of business for the remaining games this season.
Washington Commanders Signal Caller
Sam Howell is keeping perspective as he navigates the final games of the NFL season. Sam Howell had the following the say at the Wednesday press conference about his approach to end the season, and the whirlwind of rumors.
It really doesn’t mean anything right now and I think what matters is how I play each and every week… I feel like if I’m playing my best football at a consistent rate, then those questions won’t be there.
For players, especially ones that have an elite mindset, mental energy is expended on the game day preparation for the week. It is a long season for players, that can feel longer during a losing season. Toward the end of the year, games and practice remain about adding another win, regardless of what fans may hope.
Even though fans want to have a higher draft pick, this is never in consideration for NFL players. The injury risk and pain tolerated are too high for players not to give their all when faced with an opportunity on the field. There are of course exceptions, but in general, there is too much effort put into what some would call ‘meaningless football games.’
If nothing else, people are competing for jobs next year. They know that it may not be for the same team, but putting on good tape allows you a better chance to extend what can be a short football stay in the NFL.
Washington Commanders Impending Changes
It is looking increasingly likely that the Washington Commanders will face significant changes between now and the beginning of training camp in 2024. About this specific aspect Sam Howell offered the following insight.
Obviously, you can worry all year long about what’s going to happen next year, but for me, I just kind of take the approach of taking it one week at a time and really try to focus in and do everything I can on a week-to-week basis to play my best football.
For right now, Sam Howell is focused on playing well enough to put the Washington Commanders in a position to win. If he plays well enough, and is able to make the offense at least look capable, he will earn the right to start again the next week.
The upcoming weeks do not only have implications in terms of potential financial compensation from being on an active roster. They also provide an excellent opportunity for Sam Howell to prove that he is a capable starting level quarterback in this league.
