The Washington Commanders are just one of multiple teams in the league that are in search of their next quarterback. Last season, this role fell onto the shoulders of second-year stud Sam Howell, who didn’t exactly establish himself as the team’s cornerstone quarterback of the future.
At this point, it remains to be seen if Howell will still be Washington’s QB1 once the new season starts. However, newly-appointed general manager Adam Peters has revealed that this still remains a real possibility for the Commanders.
Washington Commanders GM Hints at Team’s QB Plan
As of right now, Peters isn’t ruling everything out. In fact, the high-ranking executive revealed that the QB race in Washington is wide open at the moment:
“Certainly [how the Commanders are going to address the position] hasn’t been decided by any stretch of the imagination,” Peters said, via Charean Williams of PFT. “We still have a lot of work to do. What we’re going to do whether it’s that pick or later, we really like what we have in Sam right now. So we’re really excited about that, too.
“Sam came to the facility a couple of weeks ago and got a chance to hang out. Instead of sitting around, we just took a walk. We took a walk around Commanders Park and around the fields and got to know him a little bit better, so I feel really good about him, too. So we’ve got a lot of different things we can do, but still really excited about him.”
It sounds like Howell still has a clear path toward getting another shot to prove his worth. The Commanders clearly haven’t given up on the former North Carolina standout.
Commanders Open to Discussing Trade With Bears
Talking about premier quarterbacks, projected No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams will soon find out which team he will be throwing for in 2024. There have been widespread reports about the Chicago Bears potentially trading away their No. 1 pick, though, which apparently, is a situation the Commanders are keeping an eye on.
Peters concedes that Washington will, at the very least, due their due diligence if the first pick suddenly becomes available:
“Really with anything that could happen in this league, you always want to be involved in it,” Peters said. “Whether you actually pull the trigger or not, that’s a different story. But you always want to understand what people are looking to do, what they’re doing whether it’s trading down to 28 — I don’t know who 28 is, so don’t like think I’ve got some master plan — or trading anywhere whether it’s a player or not. So, you always want to be involved in any of those things, whether you actually pull the trigger at the end. That’s when you gather all the information and make the best decision for the team.”
The Commanders do have the No. 2 pick in the draft, though, so even if they end up missing out on Williams, they would still have the option to scoop up the likes of Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels.
