Will Justin Fields be back as the Chicago Bears’ QB1 next season?
Right now, all signs are pointing to the Bears using their No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft to bring in a new cornerstone quarterback to replace Fields. However, there have also been rumors circling about Chicago potentially cashing in on that pick with the possibility of bringing Fields back for at least another year.
Chicago Bears Coach Matt Eberflus Speaks Out on QB Search
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus hasn’t decided on it just yet — or at least this is what he wants all of us to believe. However, what the tenured coach has no doubt about are the characteristics he will be searching for in his quarterback as Chicago looks to make a massive decision this summer:
“I look at situations,” Eberflus said, via Michael David Smith of PFT. “I look at the guys that can operate third down, two-minute and the end of the game situations. That, to me, is a separator. And then you look at toughness. Toughness for a quarterback really is about the mental toughness to be able to stand in the pocket and deliver the ball, and then also have the discernment to be able to move out of the pocket and create when it’s necessary. They come in all different shapes and sizes. But it’s always been fun to evaluate those guys.”
Does this sound like Justin Fields? I’m not entirely sure.
All Hope Is Not Lost
Eberflus isn’t closing any doors. According to the 53-year-old, it’s still a possibility that fans will see Fields back in a Bears uniform in 2024:
“If Justin’s back we’ll have a plan in place for that, if there’s a new quarterback we’ll have a plan in place for that,” Eberflus said.
That’s not very encouraging for Fields, though. At this point, it’s sounding more and more likely that Caleb Williams is going to be Chicago’s QB1 once the new season starts.
