The Washington Commanders were ready to head in a new direction for the rest of the 2023 NFL season. Earlier this week, it was announced that QB Jacoby Brissett would start in Week 17 against the San Francisco 49ers. However, a setback in today’s practice could put that announcement in jeopardy.
Jacoby Brissett Suffers Hamstring Injury
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Brissett suffered a hamstring injury earlier today during practice. As a result, Brissett now has a questionable status for Sunday’s game against the 49ers. Considering the type of injury this is, the Commanders may have to go in a different direction if this hamstring injury is serious enough.
Washington Commanders Moving Forward
If Brissett ends up being ruled out because of this injury, that may force Washington to go back to Sam Howell. He has been the starting quarterback for the majority of the 2023 NFL season. However, he was benched in Week 16 against the New York Jets. Plus, Howell was not planned to be the starter for Week 17.
Right now, the Commanders have a 4-11 record. They currently hold a top-four pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Considering the number of talented quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft class, there is some speculation that Washington could draft another quarterback next year. However, Howell may get one more chance to prove that he can be a reliable quarterback in the long term.
