As the 2022 fantasy season approaches, beginning to evaluate the later rounds of fantasy drafts is more important than ever. It’s no mystery that the wide receiver position offers a ton of value throughout the draft. The overall depth at the position often makes it easy to overlook players who will be in store for a plethora of targets and red zone opportunities. With most fantasy leagues looking for players with value in PPR scoring formats, later round wide receivers are more valuable than ever. In today’s article we’ll break down two underrated wide receivers heading into the 2022 fantasy season.
Hunter Renfrow:
There’s no denying that Renfrow will be losing targets to free agent signing Davante Adams, as one of the best receivers in the league joined the Raiders this offseason. But after Renfrow’s break out season in 2021 I’m not writing him off too quickly. Renfrow finished as wide receiver 11 on average in PPR scoring formats last season.
Overall, Renfrow finished with 103 receptions, just over 1000 receiving yards, and 9 scores. With opposing defenses having to focus more defensive pressure on Adams, I truly believe that Renfrow will be more open than ever and will be able to take advantage of Adams joining the Raiders offense. Renfrow is currently coming in at an average draft projection of 90 overall, making him an absolute steal in fantasy football drafts.
DeVonta Smith:
Smith easily had one of the most underrated rookie seasons last year and showed great chemistry with quarterback Jalen Hurts. Similar to Renfrow above, it could be considered worrisome that Smith is playing at the wide receiver two spot. Star wide receiver A.J. Brown was acquired by the Eagles through a trade during the NFL draft. Once again I am of the belief that this will open up the offense for Smith and allow him to take advantage of more targets as Brown takes the top off of defenses.

Overall, Smith finished as wide receiver 29 on average in PPR scoring formats last season. The rookie receiver had 64 receptions for 916 receiving yards, and 5 touchdowns. I think Hurts takes another step forward as a quarterback and his chemistry with Smith will shine through. On top of that, Smith has a beautiful average draft projection of 82 making him beyond affordable in fantasy mock drafts.
In conclusion:
When searching for those wide receivers who are going to fill in your flex spots it’s important to begin to identify what late round players you want to target. Don’t forget in the right offenses that wide receivers at the number two spot still hold a ton of value. Renfrow and Smith are going to offer that value at their current draft projections and are a part of offenses that are trending up. Don’t be surprised when both these underrated wide receivers are extremely consistent in 2022.
