Wide receiver Russell Gage signed a three-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers worth $30 million this offseason. Gage came into fantasy relevance last season during the second half of the year, being the primary receiver for the Atlanta Falcons. Gage filled in nicely for wide receiver Calvin Ridley, and alongside rookie tight end Kyle Pitts. He offered a huge boost at the flex position as well as a boost for any fantasy managers in need of a wide receiver at the end of the fantasy season. Tom Brady has already praised Gage in the offseason. All signs point to him having an extremely fantasy relevant year in 2022.
What Has Russell Gage Done So Far In The League?
Let’s look at what Gage accomplished from a fantasy perspective in the last two seasons. Gage finished as wide receiver 38 on average in PPR scoring formats in 2021. He scored a total of 161 fantasy points. In 14 games Russell Gage finished with 770 receiving yards and 4 scores on 66 targets. Gage had very similar numbers in 2020. In 16 games he finished with 786 receiving yards and 4 scores with 72 receptions. Overall, that’s 138 receptions for 1,556 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns through the past two fantasy seasons.
The important aspect when evaluating Gage heading into the 2022 fantasy football season is obviously his change of scenery. Moving from the Atlanta Falcons to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gage will be part of one of the most electrifying offenses in the entire league. Not to mention he will have the greatest quarterback of all time throwing him the football. It’s also beyond noteworthy to mention that veteran wide receiver Chris Godwin is still recovering from an ACL tear. Godwin went down in week 15 of the season and is now expected to enter the season on the reserve/PUP list. This would cause him to miss the first 6 games of the season. This should jolt Gage into the wide receiver 2 role behind veteran receiver Mike Evans. Certainly this should result in an uptick in targets for Gage.
In Conclusion:
Overall, Gage has a phenomenal average draft position (ADP) of 128. This makes him easily obtainable in most fantasy football mock drafts at this point in the offseason. Russell Gage should be locked in at the number 2 spot on a pass heavy offense led by Tom Brady. Beyond those first 6 games I still think Gage will solidify a spot within this offense and offers a lot of potential where he is currently being taken in mock drafts. There’s no denying that opposing defense will have a tough time lining up against Gage, Evans, and a healthy Godwin in 2022. Tom Brady is going to thoroughly enjoy targeting all three receivers including Gage.
