Why are Fantasy Managers Sleeping on James Conner?
Heading into the 2022 fantasy football season one of the most overlooked names at the running back position is James Conner. Conner who finished on average as running back 5 in both PPR and standard scoring formats is currently coming in at an average draft projection of 35. This projection makes Conner an absolute steal in mock drafts at this point in the offseason. Conner should be considered a top 10 running back heading into next season, and his fantasy value at his current average draft projection is through the roof. Let’s take a look at Conner’s performance last season and what we can expect heading into the coming season.
How Did Conner Perform in 2021?
There’s no denying that Conner was electrifying last season and was one of the best late round fantasy selections heading into the 2021 season. As stated above, Conner finished on average as running back 5 even while missing two games last season. Overall Conner finished the season with 752 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns, as well as 375 receiving yards off 37 receptions, and 3 receiving touchdowns. His dominance in the red-zone was relevant all season ranking third overall in touchdowns at the running back position. Not to mention when quarterback Kyler Murray is fully healthy the Cardinals bolster one of the most exhilarating offensive attacks in the NFL.

Looking Ahead to 2022
Last season there was some competition at the running back position on the Cardinals roster, with pass catching running back Chase Edmonds being involved in game plans when healthy. During the off season Edmonds signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins and will no longer be a factor for the Cardinals. With that being said the Cardinals made their own move in the off season and signed former Kansas City Chiefs running back Darrel Williams. The veteran running back could take away some third down packages and pass packages from Conner, similar to how Edmonds was utilized last year. Although Conner was re signed to the Cardinals in the offseason to be the primary back, and absolutely earned it with his performance last year. Naturally there will probably be some regression, especially in the touch down category but even so Conner is on track for another solid fantasy season.
Overall, I see no reason why Conner shouldn’t be a favorite for fantasy managers heading into this coming season, and he offers great value where he is currently being selected at this point in the off season in mock drafts.
