The Kansas City Chiefs must prepare for the reality that they will be without star tight end Travis Kelce for the long term. Kelce said he would return for the upcoming season to help the Chiefs attain a threepeat, but he could join his brother, Jason Kelce, in retirement in the 2025 offseason. We’ll look at a trade proposal the Chiefs could make near the draft that would help quarterback Patrick Mahomes for seasons to come.
The Kansas City Chiefs need future pass catchers
The Chiefs were thin at wide receiver last season when the unit was one of the league’s worst during the regular season. They planned to get better at the position this offseason
The Chiefs signed Marquise Brown in free agency this March. However, the team suffered a significant setback when reports came out on Rashee Rice’s high-speed crash. Rice could be subject to jail time or league suspension.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said this week that Rice’s legal problems will not necessarily impact how Kansas City attacks the draft. The Chiefs need to consider several other positions besides wide receiver.
Tight end should be one of them.
As Matt Lombardo wrote about in GH earlier this week, the NFL’s website thinks the Chiefs are candidates to trade up to land former Georgia standout Brock Bowers. Here’s a sample trade that was suggested between the Chiefs and the Bears:
CHIEFS RECEIVE:
- 2024 first-round pick (No. 9 overall) | 1,350 points
BEARS RECEIVE:
-
2024 first-round pick (No. 32 overall) | 590 points
-
2024 second-round pick (No. 64) | 270 points
-
2024 fourth-round pick (No. 131) | 41 points
-
2025 first-round pick | 740 points (valued at the 24th pick in the round)
One wouldn’t assume the Bears would want to trade that far back in the draft. After all, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said this offseason he wants to pair another “blue” player with the rookie quarterback they take with the No. 1 pick.
Brock Bowers could be a good replacement for Travis Kelce
Bowers’ name has exploded in NFL circles in the past week. Per Tony Pauline with Sportskeeda, Bowers is considered the most “underrated” prospect in the class:
On Monday, I reported that people around the league believe Brock Bowers is possibly the most underrated player in this draft, and since then I’ve spoken with a number of front-office decision makers who concur with the opinion and expanded on it.
As draft meetings are coming to a close, most teams I’ve spoken with have Bowers rated as the fifth or sixth player on their overall board. Bowers presently rates as the fourth player on the Sportskeeda mock draft simulator, and the second pass catcher after Marvin Harrison Jr.
Pauline doesn’t think Bowers gets past the No. 10 pick, which is currently owned by the New York Jets. While the Jets could add Bowers to help Aaron Rodgers this season, they should consider a trade that will help them when Rodgers retires. The Jets mortgaged their future on the Aaron Rodgers era.
The New York Jets would be a smart trade suitor
The Jets could trade back to recoup picks from the Chiefs. The Chiefs could then select Bowers with the No. 10 pick if the Bears draft a wide receiver like Rome Odunze.
Trade proposal
Chiefs receive:
No. 10 pick (Bowers)
Jets receive
-
2024 first-round pick (No. 32)
-
2024 second-round pick
-
2025 third-round pick
-
2025 second-round pick
The Chiefs would get a top replacement for Kelce when he retires, and the Jets would add talent to their roster that they lost when they decided to go all-in for Rodgers.
