Texas A&M senior captain Ainias Smith was arrested early Wednesday morning in College Station. Smith was speeding at 70 mph down Univeersity Drive near the Northgate bar area after 2 a.m., which led to him being pulled over by Texas A&M University Police. Field sobriety tests led to the DWI charge, and a search of Smith’s car led police to find a loaded handgun and a rolled marijuana cigarette.
Smith was set for SEC Media Days Thursday
Smith was scheduled to be one of three Aggie players to appear on behalf of Texqs A&M at the SEC Media Days on Thursay. But as of mid-day Wednesday, Smith was still not released from the Brazos County Jail.
Smith turned down an opportunity to enter the 2022 NFL Draft so he could play his senior seson at A&M. It is unknown what, if any, suspension Smith may receive as a part of his punishment.
Three-star Smith burst on to scene at Texas A&M
As a mere 3-star high school recruit coming out of Fort Bend Dullas High School, Smith burst on the scene as a true fresman by earning extensive playing experience. As a wide receiver, he caught 22 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns and also returned 16 punts for 190 yards and 23 kickoffs got 257 yards. Following that regular season, Smith was moved to the backfield for the Texas Bowl. He rushed for 54 yards on seven carries in a 24-21 A&M win over Oklahoma State.
For his sophomore season, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Smith was moved to running back. He ran for 293 yards on 49 carries and four touchdowns. He also caught 43 passes out of the backfield for a team-leading 564 yards and six touchdowns. He had a combined total of 857 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense that year.
Moved to slot receiver for junior year
In 2021, Smith was used primarily as a slot receiver. He caught 47 passes for 509 yards and six touchdowns. That brought his three-year total to 112 receptions for 1,321 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus another 373 yards rushing on 64 attempts and four more touchdowns. With one kickoff return for a touchdown, he has scored 20 touchdowns over his Aggie career.
Smith was eligible to enter the 2022 NFL Draft and many expected him to do so. But Smith decided instead to return for his senior year at Texas A&M as a team captain.
NFL Draft Bible opines on Smith
“Ainias Smith is a versatile player that will offer a lot at the next level as an offensive playmaker, especially as a receiving option out of the slot or from the backfield,” according to the NFL Draft Bible. “He may never be the go-to option in a committee as a running back so his translation to the NFL comes most easily as a slot receiver where he can excel in the short areas of the field as a quick separator.”
Smith is the younger brother of NFL defensive back Maurice Smith.
Texas A&M opens it’s 2022 season at home on September 3 at 11:00 a.m. against Sam Houston State University.
