Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan didn’t hold back his criticism of quarterback Will levis’ costly red-zone turnover in Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the New York Jets.
After the game, it was obvious that Callahan had seen enough.
“It was dumb,” Callahan told reporters after the game. “It was the same exact thing he did last week, and he cost us points in the red zone, and it is what it is. He’s a grownup and he knows better and so I was really irritated that he cost us three points in a game that we probably needed it.”
Sunday afternoon, with the Titans driving and looking to build on a 7-0 first-half lead, Levis tried to run the ball up the middle, but when he attempted to evade a Jets defender inexplicably tried to lateral the ball to Titans running back Tajee Spears despite the fact that he was surrounded by two Jets.
New York recovered, and Tennessee missed out on an opportunity to build their lead by committing a turnover at the 11-yard line.
Levis committed two turnovers against the Jets a week removed from tossing two interceptions against the Chicago Bears in the Titans’ opening day loss.
Through the first two games of the season, the Titans are winless as Levis has completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 319 yards with two touchdowns, three interceptions, and now one fumble lost after Sunday’s mindless turnover that drew his head coach’s ire.
It sure sounds as though Callahan has a short fuse for the kind of mistakes that Levis has been prone to early this season.
