Even with a subpar offense, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers managed to finish the regular season strong and go far in the playoffs. But for the team to go further, they must consider bringing guys like Houston Texans tight end Dalton Schultz in.
After Tom Brady’s retirement during the previous offseason, there were a lot of questions about how the Buccaneers would perform last year. Fortunately, not much has changed since the team did well during the regular season when they clinched the first seed in the NFC South division.
With Baker Mayfield leading the team’s offense as its quarterback, Tampa Bay made short work of the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild card round. Unfortunately, they lost to the Detroit Lions in the following round, ending their season right away.
While the Buccaneers’ defense is seventh in the league, their 20th-place offense could use some help. In this case, free agency might be the way to go for Tampa Bay.
Why The Tampa Bay Buccaneers Must Sign Dalton Schultz In Free Agency
To resolve this issue, the Buccaneers can consider signing Dalton Schultz to a projected $34 million contract. Aaron Schatz explained more in his article for ESPN:
“The Buccaneers got 455 yards and four touchdowns out of second-year tight end Cade Otton, but Schultz would expand what they can do at the position. He had 635 yards and five touchdowns for Houston, with a similar receiving DVOA to Otton but more production.
Tampa Bay’s other tight end, Ko Kieft, is strictly a blocker, so bringing in Schultz would open things up for more two-tight end sets where both tight ends are receiving threats. But Schultz is also a good run-blocker, with Pro Football Focus giving him a run-blocking grade above 60.0 in five consecutive seasons,” Schatz wrote.
While Baker Mayfield is entering free agency himself, the Buccaneers getting Schultz will ensure that no matter who plays quarterback, there’s a viable option to play tight end. At the same time, his contributions on defense will be most welcome in the coming season.
It remains to be seen what the Buccaneers will pursue in free agency. In any case, getting Schultz to sign a new contract with the team will definitely be a win.
