The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a tough decision to make this offseason. With Baker Mayfield entering free agency and set to be paid big time, the team will have to decide whether they want to keep him or search elsewhere for their next QB.
Mayfield was supposed to be a bridge QB for the Buccaneers, but to everyone’s surprise, he was sensational for the Bucs and led the franchise to the divisional round of the playoffs.
There are expectations that the Buccaneers will re-sign him in free agency, though there have been plenty of buzz linking Tampa Bay elsewhere. Now, general manager Jason Licht has provided more clarity on the situation.
What Will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Do With Baker Mayfield?
Licht effectively shot down all talks that the Buccaneers could move on from Mayfield after their one-year partnership, emphasizing to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine that they are looking to bring him back.
The Buccaneers GM shared that what the team and Mayfield have is a “perfect marriage,” and that the QB “meant a lot” to the team. He also noted that the two sides have a mutual desire to pair up once again, which should make their conversations on a new deal a bit easier.
“Baker meant a lot to this team and this fan base and this town. And I think we meant a lot to him. And I think it was a perfect marriage. And I think I’ve said before he sought us out. He gambled on us. He saw it as a good situation. He saw it better than a lot of national people who saw us with the two games, so he thought it would be good for him and it certainly was, so I know he wants to be a Buc,” Licht shared, via Ric Stroud of Tampa Bay Times.
“We want him to be a Buc. So that’s usually a good starting point.”
The Buccaneers could definitely have some option via the trade market in free agency should they decide to move on from Mayfield. For one, they have been recently linked with a potential deal for Justin Fields, who is expected to be traded by the Chicago Bears.
Nonetheless, as the old adage goes, why fix something that is not broken? Mayfield has proven he can lead the Buccaneers to the playoffs, and at 28 years old, he still has a lot to offer.
Baker Mayfield Potential Contract With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
As mentioned, Baker Mayfield is expected to get paid. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers know that very well, though the question is: How much will he ask?
According to Spotrac, Mayfield has a market value of around $27.1 million and could command a deal worth $108.5 million over four years. Recent reports noted that he could actually get as much as $30 million per season in his next deal.
Sure enough, it’s a well-deserved pay raise for Mayfield. Now, the Buccaneers and their fan base can only hope they could work on a deal that works for both sides.
