The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trying to build on their surprising playoff run this year by retaining key players and bolstering areas to boost their chances of winning another Lombardi trophy.
One of the biggest roles they want to fill is the offensive coordinator position. A new tactician who could maximize the potential of Baker Mayfield or any other quarterback would be in the best interests of Todd Bowles.
However, one of the men they’re interviewing may provide more questions than answers.
Former Eagles OC Brian Johnson interviews for Tampa Bay Buccaneers post
Brian Johnson is one of the leading candidates to land the Tampa Bay Buccaneers job after being let go from his post with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Scott Smith, the team’s senior writer, released an official announcement about the move and the status of the selection process:
As the Buccaneers continue the process of replacing Dave Canales, now the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, Johnson is the latest potential candidate to visit team headquarters. His in-person interview took place on Tuesday, five days after the Panthers hired Canales away. Canales spent just one season as the Bucs’ offensive coordinator after being hired off the Seattle Seahawks’ staff last February.
The Buccaneers have also interviewed Detroit Lions Wide Receivers Coach Antwaan Randle El, former Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt and current Houston Texans Quarterbacks Coach Jerrod Johnson for the position. Randle El met with the team virtually last Friday while Van Pelt and Johnson had in-person interviews at the AdventHealth Training Center on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a wealth of talented coaches they can choose from as their next OC. Johnson’s potential hiring would make sense, but it’s one that Eagles fans would probably shake their heads at.
Is Johnson the right man for the job?
If this move happened last year, Johnson would be an excellent hire. He worked closely with Jalen Hurts and helped him become one of the best signal-callers in the league. Hurts’ development also allowed him to snag the Eagles’ OC position in 2023.
Unfortunately for him, the team’s implosion in the second half of the season saw them whimper out of Super Bowl contention. Due to the Eagles’ lack of offensive firepower against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he was shown the door.
However, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers probably looked at his ability to build QBs and create terrifying offenses to offer him the position. Whether he gets the post or not is up to Bowles and the Bucs hierarchy.
