The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a tough task when it comes to convincing Baker Mayfield to sign a new contract with the team. However, the big issue for the team isn’t the fact that Baker hesitates to play for the Bucs. He’s said he loves playing for the Bucs and would love to re-sign with them.
However, the problem lies with money. Mayfield’s camp wants to get big money, but there is a rising belief that the former Oklahoma Sooner could become the latest iteration of Geno Smith.
With free agency looming ever closer, it’s becoming harder for the Bucs to find a favorable deal that makes everyone happy. However, one prominent voice within the Buccaneers community came forward with an interesting valuation.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers should see Baker Mayfield as a Jimmy Garoppolo-value QB
JoeBucsFan.com came out with a piece that tries to walk a tightrope between paying Baker and allowing the team to get as much cap room to chase Mike Evans as possible.
The popular blog suggested that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to give him a similar contract to what the former San Francisco 49ers and New England Patriots QB got with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The idea was supposedly suggested by former Buccaneers scout Pat Kirwan on SiriusXM NFL Radio. The blog explained his reasoning:
He said both sides might start with putting a real football comparison on the table.
“What player? You don’t even have to know the numbers. Tell me talent-wise who [Mayfield] relates to,” Kirwan said.
That name, in some cases, may not be revealed until both sides have a “framework meeting,” Kirwan said. That refers to the dollars and structure of a contract desired before digging into football comparisons and value.
What Mayfield’s camp reportedly wanted was around $40 million a year, the value Daniel Jones got. However, the team is understandably unwilling to put all of their eggs in the Baker’s basket to give them a fighting chance in keeping Evans.
However, Jimmy G’s contract—three years, $72 million—would be more reasonable for the team to keep Mayfield and try to build a contender.
Garoppolo may not be the ideal QB comp for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he was able to lead the Niners to a Super Bowl appearance in 2019. He’s also been a consistent QB for much of his playing career. His latest season under the Raiders is hopefully an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise solid QB career.
Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield has been a solid performer for the Buccaneers this year. He completed 64% of his pass attempts for 4044 passing yards and 28 TDs.
The biggest hindrance for Mayfield’s camp when it comes to getting as much money as possible is the fact that Mayfield wants to play for Tampa Bay. The Bucs will try to leverage his desire to play for them as much as they can.
If he manages to repeat his spectacular 2023 season, the Bucs would have gotten a bargain of a QB if they manage to keep him.
