Every team in the NFL is carefully assessing which free agent will be the best fit for them during the offseason. But if a high-risk, high-reward scenario is to be considered, front offices may want to take a look at signing Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Baker Mayfield.
Selected first by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 Draft, Mayfield spent four years with the team before playing one season each for the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams. After those short stints, the Buccaneers went ahead and signed the former number-one pick to another one-year contract last season.
During that time, Mayfield enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in Tampa Bay. In Week 2, the quarterback enjoyed a 76 percent completion rate, the best of his career at that time. Meanwhile, in Week 15 against the Green Bay Packers, he had a perfect passer rating when Mayfield completed 22 of 28 passes for 381 yards. He also got four touchdowns in a win against the Jordan Love-team squad.
By the end of the regular season, Mayfield helped Tampa Bay clinch the NFC South title and obtained his first Pro Bowl nomination. He also led the Buccaneers in a 32-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles but lost to the Detroit Lions in the following round.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield is a High-Risk, High-Reward Player
After his contract ended last season, Mayfield is back in free agency. Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report explains why the Buccaneers star has the chance to become the second coming of Geno Smith during his time with the Seattle Seahawks:
“Baker Mayfield truly impressed with 28 touchdown passes to 10 interceptions in his maiden (and possibly sole) campaign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it’s fair to wonder if that was a fluke.
After all, he is nearly 29 and was rarely close to being as productive for much of the five-year run that preceded his time in Florida. In a two-year span, the former No. 1 overall pick was cast aside by three teams: the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Rams.
Is it finally coming together for Mayfield? Or did he just do what Geno Smith did with the Seattle Seahawks in 2022? Somebody will pay a quarterback premium to find out,” Gagnon wrote.
Thanks to his incredible run last season, there’s a strong chance Mayfield gets signed. It remains to be seen whether the Buccaneers take a chance on him again or a new team moves in to get him.
