Virtually every single season, I can manage to get behind one of the two teams in the Super Bowl. Usually there is some positive narrative where a veteran on the verge of retirement has one last opportunity to hoist the Lombardi Trophy overhead and make the greatest achievement of their careers. Usually there is a player that fights through adversity to get to where they end up. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I don’t think either of these teams are bringing many likeable characteristics to the table.
2024 Super Bowl Expected to Be Amongst Lowest Rated in Modern Era
I’ll tell you exactly why I have an issue with it. It feels like somehow history has repeated itself and we’re all of a sudden back to the mid-2000s except this time, we don’t have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick stealing play calls. This time, we have the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce taking on arguably the best roster in football and somehow, I feel the need to root for the latter as the underdog. Obviously San Francisco is statistically the favorite but there is a reason that Mahomes has already won two Super Bowl Rings.
Part of what makes this narrative so boring is that we dealt with this exact same story last season when Kansas City took on the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Without a doubt, we’re going to end up having the exact same situation happen when Mahomes leads a “triumphant comeback” toward the end of this game because that is just what we are accustomed to seeing now.
One of the few narratives I’ve been able to support is cheering for Mr. Irrelevant himself. After being the last overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, quarterback Brock Purdy has managed to make a legitimate case at the Most Valuable Player award this season as he finished the season amongst the leaders in quarterback rating. He’s the closest person anyone watching this game will get to an underdog and that won’t even cut it for most people.
This game is going to be another example of how angry people can get with the Taylor Swift situation. There’s been outrage from all sorts of ridiculous sources ranging from Donald Trump to the right wing media regarding Taylor Swift and some outrageous political statement they think she is going to make. Let’s set the record straight: Swift is a musician who is only attending the game to support her boyfriend. No one is going to make any political chants in the middle of the game and no one is going to see anything out of the ordinary.
While I will be hugely upset that this Sunday will mark the end of football this year, I cannot feign that we’ll be on the outside of another possible Kansas City Super Bowl victory. The best component of the NFL is the design of the salary cap and the NFL Draft providing parity and fairness for all teams to compete. After watching Brady win seven Super Bowls in a 20 year span, I certainly don’t want to watch someone else enjoy that level of dominance.
