Oklahoma has extended another offer in the 2023 class, this one going to three-star EDGE Taylor Wein. In light of Colton Vasek’s decommitment, the Sooners had to find a replacement. Taylor Wein looks to be that guy. Don’t let his star rating fool you. Wein is a fantastic talent, and is extremely underrated. Just minutes after receiving an offer from Oklahoma, Wein received an offer from the University of Southern California.

I firmly believe that Wein could end up as a high three-star, or even a low four-star by the end of the cycle. He’s a guy that flew under the radar for a while, but Oklahoma and Coach Chavis made a great evaluation on this guy. Whether or not he ends up as a Sooner is to be seen, but Wein will prove to be an asset wherever he ends up.
How Does Taylor Wein’s Tape Match Up?
Taylor Wein may not be one of the biggest names in recruiting right now, but he sure does play like he is. You can check out his Hudl highlights by clicking here. Although a Hudl highlight reel isn’t the best way to evaluate a prospect, it can still show us flashes of his potential. First of all, he’s got a great frame for a defensive end, listed at 6-6, 245 lbs. Something that really stands out on his film is his explosiveness off of the line of scrimmage. It feels like he is beating his man off the line on every single play.
He utilizes his hands well, and has some nice moves in the pass rush. He’s good at getting off of his blocks, and takes good pursuit angles to make tackles in the backfield. He usually gets a hand or a shoulder pad on the ball when he makes tackles, resulting in a lot of forced fumbles. He does a good job of getting in the backfield in the run game, although does play a little too high at times.
In all honesty, there isn’t a whole lot to go off of to truly evaluate Taylor Wein, but these are some impressions that I had after taking a look at his Hudl. This was a great evaluation by Miguel Chavis. Wein could end up as a diamond in the rough for Oklahoma, and is a good rebound after losing Colton Vasek to the Longhorns.
