At 4:00pm on November 8th, long time Oklahoma pledge Colton Vasek flipped his commitment to the University of Texas. Ever since he committed to Oklahoma in August, there has been smoke of him flipping to the Longhorns. For a while it seemed that these were just rumors.
Whenever he was asked about his commitment to Oklahoma, he was saying all the right things, stating that he still has 100-percent belief in Coach Chavis and Coach Venables. However, over time, the situation started to shift in Texas’s favor. More and more buzz around Vasek being a Longhorn began to surface. On Sunday, Vasek completely scrubbed both his Instagram and Twitter accounts of anything related to OU before ultimately joining the Longhorn’s 2023 class.
What Made Colton Vasek Reconsider?

Obviously there were many factors that influenced Vasek’s decision, but the biggest one seemed to be his family. His father, Brian Vasek, played defensive end for Texas in the 90s. As a Longhorn legacy, Vasek was always going to be difficult to pull from Austin. However, it was widely believed that he wanted to get out of Austin and make a name for himself elsewhere. For the months leading up to his commitment, Oregon was the perceived leader, until Venables and co. made a large push for him at the Party at the Palace.
Even after he committed to the Sooners, Vasek remained in contact with Texas Defensive Coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. He stated that he kept in contact with both Kwiatkowski and Head Coach Steve Sarkisian “pretty much every week.” On top of this, Colton Vasek is very close with Texas QB commit Arch Manning. The two have been in contact for quite some time. Long story short, Vasek had a multitude of people surrounding him that wanted him in Austin.
Where Does OU Go From Here?

With Colton Vasek’s decommitment, many fans are frantic for some good news on the recruiting trail. Some have given up entirely, and are preparing for the worst.

Although losing Vasek hurts, the Sooners are far from finished on the recruiting trail for the 2023 class. Five-star EDGE PJ Adebawore isn’t going anywhere, and Oklahoma is still in good standing with top 100 EDGE Tausili Akana. On top of that, they are still pushing to flip players such as David Hicks and Peyton Bowen. As it stands, OU still has one of the best defensive classes they’ve had in a very long time. Fret not Sooner fans, everything will be okay.
