Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott has been under fire this week over a motivational speech he made back in 2019. He said the team needed to be like the hijackers because they worked together as a team. The story got so big that it made it to the Weekend Update portion of SNL.

SNL Pokes Fun At Buffalo Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott
It was just a quick joke in the whole Weekend Update segment. You can watch the 20-second clip featuring Colin Jost delivering the joke above. This shows how big this story has gotten. It has transcended the sports world and gotten into the mainstream media. With all the discourse around this situation this week in the NFL world, it was great to see someone poke fun at the situation a little.
Weird Timing
I found the timing of this piece to be strange. First off, let me be clear that he shouldn’t have said it. Of all the comparisons to make, that was not the one. However, I find the timing to be very weird. This was made all the way back in 2019. Why are we just now hearing about it four years later? While the Bills were having success, we didn’t hear anything about this comment but as soon as struggles started to happen and people called for McDermott’s firing, this piece dropped. While he should be held accountable for it, the timing is odd.
Will the Bills keep McDermott past this season? It likely depends on how the rest of the season goes. If the Bills can make the playoffs, he has a better chance of staying in the position. If he doesn’t, I would not be surprised if the Bills move on.
