The New York Giants might have scored a pyrrhic over the hapless Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. Running back Saquon Barkley had to leave late in the game due to an injury.
Barkley was trying to help the Giants gain their first lead of the season on their final drive against the Cardinals. After being blown out by the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1, the Giants managed to have a dramatic come-from-behind victory over a Cardinals team most pundits think are in the Caleb Williams’ sweepstakes next April.
While Daniel Jones was furiously trying to show his teammates and the greater NFL world he’s more valuable to the league than Joshua Dobbs, Jones mostly gave Barkley the ball on the team’s final possession in the hopes of moving the ball into scoring range. Barkley landed awkwardly on a two-yard run to the Cardinals’ 21-yard line.
Cameras caught Barkley limping off and around the sideline. He was visibly frustrated on the sideline with his injury.
The New York Giants could be without Saquon Barkley on Thursday
According to Jordan Raanan with ESPN, Barkley had an x-ray done after the game. Raanan is reporting the injury is a long-term concern for the Gaints. And it could cost him a chance to play on Thursday night against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3.
Saquon Barkley had an x-ray on his right ankle after the game. He limped around the locker room and it was a bit swollen. Clearly he had some pain and discomfort.
This is definitely a concern for the Giants and Barkley moving forward, especially with a short turnaround this week…

According to Jordan Schultz, the Giants think Barkley has a sprained ankle. However, Barkley will undergo an MRI to confirm.
Sources: The #Giants believe Pro Bowl RB Saquon Barkley suffered a sprained ankle at the end of today’s win over the #AZCardinals.
I’m told it “could have been much worse,” and the team feels Barkley avoided a major injury.

The Giants offense would be underserved without Barkley against the 49ers. The 49ers are more of a contender like the Cowboys than a team looking for Williams. Jones and the Giants could find out what the offense looks like with Jones against another competent defense–minus Barkley.
