The San Francisco 49ers received disturbing news on Saturday afternoon. While on his way to an autograph signing event, rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in an attempted robbery. The 49ers start their season on September 9 against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.
Obviously, the most important matter at hand is not their upcoming Week One game. It is the short and long-term health of Pearsall. Last night, it was reported that he was in stable condition, with teammate Deebo Samuel updating social media on Pearsall’s outlook.
However long Pearsall is going to be out is not yet known but based on what his mom shared on social media, it could have been a lot worse.
San Francisco 49ers Wide Receiver Ricky Pearsall Avoided Deadly Injuries
Reports immediately following the shooting were not clear. What was known was that Pearsall was in stable condition, but some reports indicated he had been shot in the arm while others stated he had been shot in the chest.
The would-be robber, who was trying to take Pearsall’s Rolex watch, was also shot in a fight with the 49ers wide receiver over the gun.
On Sunday morning, Pearsall’s mom shared the following message on social media: “Update on my baby boy. First and foremost, I want to thank GOD for protecting my baby boy. He is extremely lucky. GOD shielded him. He was shot in his chest and it exited out his back. Thanks be to GOD that it missed his vital organs.
“He is in good spirits right now. Life is so precious my friends. please love each other. My son was spared today by the grace of GOD. Please pray for my baby.”
As one can see from his mom’s comments, Pearsall was shot in the chest and the bullet exited his body through his back. However, his heart and lungs were not touched by the bullet.
Not Much Is Known About the Shooter
According to various reports online, the would-be shooter was a 17-year-old boy from Tracy, California. Because he is a juvenile, the police are not releasing his name. He has been arrested and is currently in the hospital. The shooter in is stable condition.
Amazingly, despite taking a bullet to the chest, Pearsall was able to walk to the ambulance that took him to the hospital:
