The San Francisco 49ers are coming off their worst performance of the 2023-24 NFL season as they lost at home to the Baltimore Ravens 33-19. In the game, starting quarterback Brock Purdy left the game in the fourth quarter and did not return to action as backup quarterback Sam Darnold finished the game.
During his media availability after the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan discussed the Brock Purdy injury and that he expects Purdy to be available for Week 17 against the Washington Commanders. Purdy was seen going to the medical tent and finished the game with a career-high four interceptions.
#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan indicated he doesn’t believe stinger issue for QB Brock Purdy will linger. Purdy potentially could have gone back in but Shanahan kept him out given the score and OL situation.

So with the injury being considered a stinger and no time expected to be missed, the 49ers will still keep Purdy under center. his loss snapped a six-game winning streak for San Francisco as well as likely forced Purdy to lose the NFL MVP Award.
Can Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers still get the top seed in the NFC?
The San Francisco 49ers may have lost to the Baltimore Ravens in primetime on Christmas Day, but they still control their own destiny in terms of the playoffs. Despite an embarrassing loss, this Niners squad still holds the top seed in the NFC with two weeks remaining.
The San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions are the three teams that are all tied with an 11-4 record in the NFC but the 49ers hold the top spot. They defeated the Eagles in a head-to-head matchup and have a better conference record than the Lions. With the tiebreakers in their hands, those two teams would need to have a better record to get the bye and home-field advantage in the postseason.
With Brock Purdy expected to not miss any time and only dealing with a stinger injury, it is difficult to expect the 49ers to lose hold of the top seed of the conference. Their two remaining games is at the Washington Commanders and home for the Los Angeles Rams. San Francisco may have lost a chance to rest players in Week 18 but they should be able to win both games and secure the top seed in the NFC without needing Philly or Detroit’s help.
