San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy didn’t make it to the Super Bowl by dumb luck. His talent and cool demeanor under center made him an irreplaceable presence in the team’s locker room that helped them reach Super Bowl LVIII.
However, people in and around the league still slap him with the “game manager” label despite his solid QB play. During Super Bowl Opening Day, the Iowa State product decided to address the issue.
Brock Purdy thinks being San Francisco 49ers’ game manager is ‘funny’
Purdy addressed questions during the Super Bowl Opening Day, and one of the questions he addressed was the game manager label that got slapped onto him. Analysts, fans, and former players who still doubt the field general’s capabilities slapped him the label and credited his success to his teammates.
While people have defended him from such allegations, he didn’t speak much on the issue itself. However, he took the press leading up to the Super Bowl to share his two cents on the matter.
This is Purdy’s statement on being a game manager, as reported by Yardbarker’s Zac Wassink:
“I think it’s sort of funny, just because we’re winning,” Purdy recently told ESPN’s Michelle Beisner-Buck, as shared by David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. “I think, over time, I might get some respect, but more than anything, it hasn’t been about proving people wrong or any of that. It’s always been about just proving myself right. Over time, I’ve told myself that I’m good enough and I’m worthy enough to be playing at this level, and over time, I’ll prove that to myself.”
During the same interview, he also tempered expectations from overly zealous fans who are already putting his name beside legendary San Francisco 49ers QBs like Joe Montana and Steve Young:
“It just wouldn’t really make sense to me for my name to be up there with theirs,” Purdy said of Montana and Young. “I can’t get caught up in all that. It’s, ‘How can I be the best for this 2023 49ers football team and try to do everything I can to win the championship for them?’ But what an honor it would be.”
Purdy has been spectacular for Kyle Shanahan’s offense this season. He passed for 4280 yards and 31 touchdowns through 17 regular-season games. He also showcased his clutch genes by leading comeback efforts against the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions in the playoffs.
His San Francisco 49res will be facing a tough squad in the Kansas City Chiefs, but his ability should see him stand on equal footing with Patrick Mahomes.
