Saints Key Stats
The New Orleans Saints have been brutal offensively as they are tied for 25th with 15.5 points per game and outside the top 20 in rushing and passing yards per game. Quarterback Derek Carr has to show some improvement as he is currently 80-of-124 (64.5 completion percentage) for 763 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Running back Alvin Kamara was able to make his season debut as he returned from his three-game suspension and was a threat in both the passing and rushing game. He had 11 carries for 51 yards and 13 receptions for just 33 yards. With the offensive weapons, this offense should be a lot better than they are producing thus far.
Their defense has been carrying the team along as they are ninth in the NFL with 19 points per game. A huge reason for their success has been their ability to force turnovers and the team has five interceptions. If the pass defense can continue to step up as they have allowed just five passing touchdowns, they are going to be in a great position to win this game.
Patriots Key Stats
The New England Patriots have been an atrocious offensive team right now as they are averaging 13.8 points per game, which is 30th in the sport. They are not getting much production in the running game as they have just 93.5 rushing yards per game thus far. Quarterback Mac Jones has to do better as he is 93-of-146 (63.7 completion percentage) for 898 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions while having a 44.7 QBR right now.
Last week’s 35-point loss was the largest loss in the Bill Belichick era but are keeping Jones under center. Their defense suffered a major blow as first-round rookie cornerback Christian Gonzalez suffered a season-ending injury. However, they are replacing him with a trade for former Patriot cornerback J.C. Jackson.
The defense needs to improve as well as they are 21st in football with 24.3 points per game allowed. A big reason is the fact they are not forcing takeaways as they only have two forced turnovers (one interception, one fumble recovery). In a tough division, they cannot afford to go to 1-4 if they want to make the postseason.
Game Prediction
The offense of both teams are a little shaky throughout the first month of the season but the weapons that the Saints have should continue to improve. This New England offense is not doing well and there is not many positives we can take out of them.
Alvin Kamara looks like he is going to have a lot of check-downs and should dominate this week after getting back into the rhythm of the game. The Patriots have not scored more than 20 points in any game this season and we are choosing a winner for this game. Expect the Saints to do well here and cover the spread with the better team.
