The New England Patriots took a massive risk in the recently concluded NFL Draft when they scooped up Christian Gonzales as the 17th overall pick. The Pats could have gone in an entirely different direction, but clearly, they just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add the 21-year-old prospect.
David McCourty ‘Excited’ By Christian Gonzales’ Progress
Exactly 13 years ago, the Patriots took a similar approach in the 2010 NFL Draft. They selected David McCourty out of Rutgers as their first-round pick. That turned out to be an excellent decision from New England, with the two-time Pro Bowl DB going on to play his entire career with the Patriots. He won no less than three Super Bowl rings along the way, too.
You could say that when it comes to Patriots cornerbacks, McCourty is a bit of an authority on the matter. This is exactly why New England fans should be excited about what the retired star had to say about the new CB on the block:
“If you go by watching training camp early, the way he’s playing in games, you’ve got to be excited,” McCourty said, Justin Leger of NBC Sports Boston. “I think he’s shown, ‘I am the guy you thought coming out when it comes to coverage skills and covering guys up.’ And I think he’s shown, ‘I’m going to use this big frame in the NFL. I’m going to be aggressive; I’m going to go tackle; I’m going to do those things.”
It isn’t just McCourty that has been left impressed by Gonzales throughout the offseason. It seems that the Patriots coaching staff are in the same boat as well, with the former Colorado and Oregon standout primed to get the nod as a starter from the get-go. Gonzales is expected to start as the outside corner opposite of Jonathan Jones, and if all goes according to plan, this young man could make a lot of noise early on.
