The Dallas Cowboys are in flux after Dan Quinn left the team to take over the Washington Commanders. With the Dallas DC job open, multiple coaches are vying to get the opportunity to lead America’s Team back to the Super Bowl.
However, Jerry Jones will likely want a proven winner to lead his team’s defensive efforts. And if the coaching search will be based on reputation and relationships, there’s one coach who will likely get the nod and complete his NFL comeback.
Mike Zimmer’s Dallas Cowboys history might land him the DC job
According to Blogging The Boys’ Jess Haynie, the former Dallas Cowboys coach would be the biggest favorite to win the job if Jerry Jones decides to go with experience instead of betting on some of the team’s younger talent:
The 67-year-old Zimmer has a rich history with the Cowboys organization. He was pulled into Barry Switzer’s first staff in 1994 as an assistant, helping Dallas win their last Super Bowl the following year, and worked his way up the ranks to defensive back coach and eventually coordinator. Zimmer’s value was evident enough for him to survive the change from Switzer to Chain Gailey in 1998, and then Dave Campo promoted Zimmer to his old job of defensive coordinator when he became Dallas’ head coach in 2000.
Even when Bill Parcells arrived in 2003, bringing some big changes with him, Zimmer survived the transition and adapted to coaching a 3-4 defense. He remained coordinator until 2007, when Wade Phillips came in and wanted heavy control on that side of the ball. In total, Zimmer spent 13 years with the Cowboys
During his 13 years in Arlington, he helped transform their defense into one of the best in the nation. His best year as Dallas DC was in 2003, when his team ranked first in the least passing yards allowed, second in the least passing points allowed, third in the least rushing yards allowed, and third in the least rushing TDs allowed.
There are reports that Zimmer kept himself sharp to take over any DC role at the drop of the hat. Should Jerry Jones decide to go with Zimmer, he’ll be getting a determined coach who will look to make the most of his opportunity back in the NFL.
