New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh isn’t worrying about his future with the New York Jets. That much is clear as he responded to questions about his job security following their Week 15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Saleh has long been on the hot seat with the Jets, though Aaron Rodgers’ injury has given him some benefit of the doubt. After the 30-0 shutout that they endured on Sunday that eliminated them from playoff contention, however, calls for him to get fired further intensified.
The Jets tactician, who has been the team’s head coach since 2021, understands the business side of the NFL. He’s been in the league long enough to know that results matter more than anything else. With that being said, he is well aware that everyone can lose their job in the league at any given moment.
That is also why he’s of the belief that he couldn’t worry about his future with the season still going on. All he can do right now is guide the Jets to win their next game in Week 16, which is against the Washington Commanders. He could only control what he can, and anything beyond the game isn’t one of them.
“(There are) two types of coaches: those who’ve been fired and those who are about to get fired. We coach in the moment. We coach to win a football game,” Saleh said on Monday, per Connor Hughes of SNY TV.
He added, “I’m just coaching, trying to beat Washington.”
New York Jets Getting Frustrated With Robert Saleh?
It’s not surprising why the calls for Robert Saleh to get fired is growing stronger, though. The comments made by some New York Jets players following their loss to the Miami Dolphins are telling of what they feel about the coaching.
For one, wide receiver Allen Lazard bluntly implied that the Dolphins had better coaching, which is why they were able to dominate.
“They out-schemed us, out-efforted us, they played a better football game than we did today,” Lazard said, via the team’s website.
Cornerback DJ Reed also seemingly threw a shade on Saleh–whether on purpose or not–when he shared the Mike McDaniel knows their offense pretty well since he and Saleh used to coach together with the San Francisco 49ers.
“McDaniel definitely knows what he’s doing. He was in San Francisco (with Saleh), so he definitely knows our defense pretty well. He knows the ins and outs,” Reed explained.
Did Reed just implied that Saleh didn’t do enough adjustments to counter McDaniel’s preparation? Maybe not. But it speaks volumes on what the Jets coach could have done.
It remains to be seen what the Jets will do with Saleh after the season. For now, as the coach himself said, their focus is on their next game.
