Jimmy Garoppolo could play in championship rounds
Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury in Week 13 cast doubt on the San Francisco 49ers’ playoff chances. It was assumed at the time Garoppolo would be out for the season with a broken foot. Since then, backup quarterback Brock Purdy has been stellar as a starter. The 49ers won the NFC West and dominated the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round. Garoppolo could have a chance to retake the reins for the 49ers in the postseason.
According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, head coach Kyle Shanahan updated Garoppolo’s injury status for the playoffs. He said Garoppolo has an “outside chance” to play in the NFC Champions game, should the 49ers defeat the Dallas Cowboys Sunday. Shanahan added that Garoppolo would have a “better chance” to play in the Super Bowl should the 49ers advance that far.

This would be a massive boost for the 49ers. The 49ers were already getting positive news on the injury front Friday for Sunday’s game.
One should note in the report, Shanahan did not specify Jimmy Garoppolo would be the starter in the NFC Championship game or the Super Bowl. With the way Purdy has been playing in recent weeks, Shanahan could use Garoppolo as a backup option. We’ll see how Purdy plays against the Cowboys Sunday. Purdy had a shaky start in the first half against the Seahawks last Saturday but played much better in the second half of the Wild Card win.
