The Pittsburgh Steelers have fallen on hard times these last few weeks. Thanks to an ankle injury to starting QB Kenny Pickett, the Steelers have had to rely on Trubisky since then. Unfortunately, the team is freefalling, having lost their last three games. As a result, head coach Mike Tomlin took drastic action late in the Week 15 loss against the Indianapolis Colts.
Mitchell Trubisky Benched
With 2:08 remaining in the game, backup QB Mason Rudolph ran on the field to take his first snap in an NFL game in nearly two years. It was at that moment it was confirmed that head coach Mike Tomlin had seen enough from QB Mitchell Trubisky.
Just how bad has Trubisky been? Today, he went 16-23, threw 169 passing yards, a touchdown pass, and two interceptions. Trubisky has four touchdown passes and five interceptions in five games this season.
However, Rudolph was rather ineffective in his brief appearance. He went 2-3 and had just three passing yards.
Who Will the Pittsburgh Steelers Move Forward With?
Right now, it is hard to say which direction the Steelers will go. Next week, they host the Cincinnati Bengals, who came up with a big comeback win earlier today against the Minnesota Vikings.
On one hand, you can argue that Tomlin let Rudolph play because the Steelers trailed by 14 points late in the game. On the other hand, it could be a sign that Tomlin is ready to move in a different direction with Rudolph. We will have to see who Tomlin decides to move forward with next week.
