The Philadelphia Eagles are looking to get back to winning games similar to how the team was able to in the first half of the regular season. However, this time of year brings in the cap casualty and the Eagles have officially released two-time All-Pro safety Kevin Byard, making him an unrestricted free agent.
Byard split time with the Tennessee Titans and the Philadelphia Eagles this season as he was able to record an interception, a fumble recovery and three pass deflections over 16 games. Byard was slated for $9.6 million in base salary in 2024 and had a $14.4 million cap hit. This move clears more than $13 million in cap for the Eagles.
The Philadelphia Eagles were able to acquire Kevin Byard at the Trade Deadline for a fifth-round pick, sixth-round pick and safety Terrell Edmunds. It will be interesting to see where Byard lands in 2024.
What do the Philadelphia Eagles do during the offseason?
Kevin Byard is a talented secondary member and his two Pro Bowls and All-Pros are signs of it. However, the Philadelphia Eagles want to clear cap space and did not get that type of production out of him in 10 games. With new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio calling the shots on the defensive side for the team, paying a safety that much may not lead to success.
However, this Eagles team does need to address the secondary as they were struggling to defend against the pass last season. One player they may target during the offseason is safety Marcus Maye or even entertaining a reunion with C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Whatever they do, general manager Howie Roseman needs to make sure they defend the pass a lot better than in 2023.
This Eagles team is full of talent and may decide to address the secondary in the 2024 NFL draft but whatever they do, they cannot stand put on the defensive side of the football.
