The Philadelphia Eagles are a franchise that is going through many changes this offseason. While Nick Sirianni remains the head coach, they have new offensive and defensive coordinators. Kellen Moore is taking over for Brian Johnson as offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio, who was almost hired by the Eagles before the 2023 NFL season, was brought on as defensive coordinator after spending last season in the same role with the Miami Dolphins.
Most of the coaching changes are happening on the defensive side of the ball. In addition to Fangio, the defensive staff welcomes several new faces:
- Clint Hurtt- defensive line coach
- Christian Parker- passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach
- Roy Anderson- cornerbacks coach
- Joe Kasper- safeties coach
- Bobby King- inside linebackers coach
- Ronell Williams- assistant linebackers coach/defensive quality control
- Tyler Scudder- defensive quality control coach
While these changes are promising and should help Philadelphia have better results than their 11-6 regular season and one-and-done appearance in the NFL Playoffs, they also are facing some major holes on their roster due to future Hall of Famers contemplating retirement.
Philadelphia Eagles Center Jason Kelce Is Weighing Retirement
Jason Kelce is a seven-time Pro Bowler, six-time First Team All-Pro, and a Super Bowl Champion. A spot is almost certainly waiting for him at the Pro Hall of Fame in Canton when his career comes to and end. When the Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs, many assumed that it was his final game.
There were even rumors that he had told some of his teammates that he was going to retire during the offseason. He has, however, tempered the retirement talk for the time being:
“I don’t know. I’m trying to figure it out right now. Right now, exploring different opportunities if I end up retiring… [I’m} still working out and staying in shape if I end up playing again.”
Even at 36 years old, Kelce was still one of the best centers in the NFL last season. The question is not whether he can play anymore; he has proved that he is still elite, being named to the Pro Bowl and a First Team All-Pro this past season.
The question is whether or not he wants to keep putting his body through the rigors of another NFL season.
And it sounds like he is not the only one weighing this question.
Philadelphia Eagles Legend Fletcher Cox Is Contemplating Retirement
According to a report co-written by Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Eagles great Fletcher Cox is also thinking about retirement:
“ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported last month that Eagles center Jason Kelce told teammates he is retiring, and I’ve talked to multiple sources who believe defensive tackle Fletcher Cox will probably retire at some point this offseason, too. Now, retirements are tricky — plans are malleable as players emerge from the haze of the season — but there’s a real possibility the Eagles will be replacing two legends at once.”
Cox played 15 games this season, had 5.0 sacks, and 33 total tackles. His 70.0 sacks rank fifth all-time in Eagles history and his 188 games played trail only Brandon Graham and Kelce for the franchise’s most games played. Cox’s three defensive touchdowns scored are tied with Seth Joyner for the most by a Philadelphia player.
