The Kansas City Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in an overtime thriller, and that victory propelled Mahomes to 15 playoff wins in his career, which is one more than Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos legend Peyton Manning.
Mahomes has also officially surpassed Manning’s total number of Super Bowl victories with three. Manning won a Super Bowl with the Colts in the 2006-2007 season and the Broncos in the 2015-2016 season.
Mahomes won his second Super Bowl in two years with the most recent victory over the 49ers. His first Super Bowl win also came against the 49ers, but it was in the 2019-2020 season.
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes isn’t even 30-years-old
Patrick Mahomes has already accomplished what many would consider to be a Hall-of-Fame career, yet he is just 28-years-old. Mahomes has three Super Bowls, and he joined an elite list of players as one of three to have three Super Bowl MVPs.
Only New England Patriots legend Tom Brady and San Francisco 49ers legend Joe Montana have won the Super Bowl MVP three times. Mahomes became the only NFL quarterback in history to start in four Super Bowls in before turning 30.
Before Manning was 30 he never went to a Super Bowl and only managed to amass just under 2,500 passing yards, which is good for 12th all time . Mahomes has more doubled that with over 5,100 postseason passing yards and he is only 28.
The next best playoff QB under 30 years old is Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre. Favre has 3,390 yards passing in the postseason while under 30. Mahomes has 41 postseason touchdowns to Favre’s 25.
With a game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl 58, Mahomes is now also tied for second all time in game-winning touchdown passes in the fourth quarter/overtime in NFL playoff history. He tied Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams legend Kurt Warner with three, whil Joe Montana is the leader with four.
In an article from the Associated Press, Mahomes explains why just one championship did not quench his thirst for greatness.
“I think Tom said it best: Once you win that championship, you have those parades and you get those dreams, you’re not the champion anymore. You have to come back to that with the same mentality,” Mahomes said. “And I learned from guys like that that have been the greatest of all time.”
Patrick Mahomes’ greatness shouldn’t overshadow the greatness of Peyton Manning
Former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning may not have the championships to compete with Patrick Mahomes, but his all-time statistics speak to his longevity and sustained success in the NFL.
Manning has 71,940 career passing yards, which makes him third all-time behind Drew Brees and Tom Brady. As it stands, Mahomes is 65th all-time with 28,424 career passing yards.
Manning is also third all-time in career passing touchdowns with 539, with only Brees and Brady beating him out here as well. Manning had 14 Pro Bowl appearances in 18 seasons along with five MVP awards.
Manning was named a first-team All-Pro quarterback seven times in his career, and he was also named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s.
Manning’s first Super Bowl came against the Chicago Bears, which was a game that saw Manning fight back after Bears returner Devin Hester returned the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Manning had 247 yards passing and a touchdown as the Colts beat the Bears 29-17.
Peyton Manning finally reached football’s Promised Land.

Manning’s second Super Bowl victory came against the Carolina Panthers, who finished the regular season at 15-1 behind QB Cam Newton’s MVP campaign. Manning, who would be playing the last game of his career, relied on one of the best defenses in the league to get the win. He finished with just 141 yards passing and an interception on a 56.5% completion rate as the oldest starting QB in Super Bowl history.

While Mahomes has already passed Manning in a lot of ways, Manning’s longevity and all time stats still create a substantial gap between Mahomes and himself.
