You can be sure that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were watching intently when the Cincinnati Bengals and Joe Burrow reset the market with their star quarterback’s record-breaking deal. This came out to $275 million for five years, making Burrow the highest-paid player in NFL history.
Well, Mahomes and the Chiefs changed that on Monday.
Patrick Mahomes Restructures Contract With Kansas City Chiefs
Mahomes originally signed his 10-year extension with the Chiefs in 2020. It was worth $477 million, which at that time, also set the NFL record. However, after Burrow signed his extension with Cincinnati, Mahomes fell a full $10 million short of Burrow’s annual income.
It was reported on Monday that the two-time NFL MVP’s contract has now been restructured to allow Mahomes to pocket a mind-blowing $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026. Once again, the two-time All-Pro quarterback has set a new record for the most money in a four-year span.
Patrick Mahomes Reacts to New Deal
You can also be sure that Mahomes was over the moon with this development. He took to Twitter to share his three-word reaction shortly after news broke about his restructured contract:
Thank you God! 🙏🏽
— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes) September 18, 2023
Mahomes did not say much, but you just know that the 28-year-old is feeling extremely grateful for all this.
There’s no denying that this is a lot of money and that the Chiefs will need to dig deep into their pockets in order to make this deal work. However, if you consider what Patrick Mahomes brings to the table, you can’t really say that he’s not worth his weight in gold.
The Chiefs are coming off a Super Bowl title, which happens to be their second in the span of four years. Under Mahomes’ leadership, they are now looking to make it three championships in five seasons.
