The Dallas Cowboys’ running back room seems to be a perennial talking point for the footballing world.
Dallas Cowboys In The Midst Of Another Running Back Discussion
First they are paying Ezekiel Elliot too much, then they are not playing backup, Tony Pollard enough – and then too much.
Now, in 2024, the discussion has shifted to not payment or playing time but simply just “who?”.
Having failed to add a tailback in this past draft, the Dallas Cowboys turned back to familiar face, Ezekiel Elliot, who re-signed after a 1 year sabbatical with the New England Patriots in 2023.
Although one could classify the Cowboys’ running back room as somewhat deep, with Elliot joining impressive 2023 contributor, Rico Dowdle; 2nd year pro, Deuce Vaugn; and offseason free-agent signing, Royce Freeman in a group that still lacks explosive power.
Who Could The Dallas Cowboys Add Strength To Their RB Group
Ari Meirov believes that the Cowboys could go after the Miami Dolphins’ Jeff Wilson Jr., the somewhat unheralded 3rd man of a impressive trio that also features Pro Bowler, Raheem Mostert, and 2023 rookie standout speedster, De’Von Achane.
With the selection of Jaylen Wright in the 4th round of this past 2024 draft; another speedster who Dallas reportedly loved, but were unable to select, being without their 4th round pick that was used to trade for former 3rd overall pick, Trey Lance; Wilson Jr. could be the odd man out in an otherwise hyper competitive room.
As Meirov states:
“The Miami Dolphins drafted Tennessee RB Jaylen Wright in the fourth round, adding him to the mix with De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert. Miami, which is tight against the cap, would clear $1.2M if it moved on from Jeff Wilson Jr.”
Matt Lombardo, of Heavy.com, presents a 6th round pick as adequate compensation for the 2018 UDFA, who is a free agent after 2024, which would probably be around the maximum that the Cowboys would be willing to part with for the ex 49er.
Although Wilson Jr. had an excellent season in 2022, garnering 860 yards, despite a mid-season trade to the Miami Dolphins, his 188 total in 2023 may be a cause for minor concern, especially considering the North Texas alum’s fairly luminous injury history.
Whatever the return, it would surely not cost the Cowboys much to attain Jeff Wilson Jr. and he would likely add some power, force and starting caliber quality to a group that is sorely lacking in it.
