The Sooners trail only powerhouses Georgia and Alabama, alongside Auburn, in the updated recruiting ranks among schools in the SEC. The Oklahoma football program will play its first season in its new conference in 2024. They competed in the Big 12, formerly the Big 8, 7, and 6, since 1928.
Oklahoma Football: Flush with Talent Regarding the Class of 2024
Head coach Brent Venables and Director of Player Personnel Drew Hill have owned the recruiting circuit this season, with 27 players committed to Norman for next fall. Among the teams in On3 Recruitings’ top 25 rankings, the Sooners remain tied for second with the most five, four, or three stars signed to their program. Headlining the class of 2024 is their lone five-star recruit, IMG Academy defensive lineman David Stone. The six-foot-four, 275-pound first-level defender picked Oklahoma over the Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, and Michigan State Spartans, among others.
The Sooners also inked 15 four-star recruits, more than the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Texas Longhorns. The highest-ranked four-star commits per 247Sports are running back Taylor Tatum and wide receiver Zion Kearney. Tatum rushed for 1,463 yards and 20 touchdowns at power Longview in Texas last year, while Kearney is a six-foot-two wideout from Hightower High School, also in Texas.
Oklahoma Sooners: Make Massive Strides During Second Season Under Head Coach Brent Venables
The Sooners went 10-2 this season, pending the results of their bowl game clash with the Arizona Wildcats. Oklahoma failed to make a postseason game last year, going 6-7 in their first season with Brent Venables as their head coach. Venables replaced Lincoln Riley after the latter darted for the USC Trojans, taking quarterback Caleb Williams with him. However, it took Venables just one season to make massive strides, sparked by an offense that finished 3rd in the country regarding points per game. Additionally, the defense played well behind star linebacker Danny Stutsman.
