We are witnessing a unique period in college football, marked by player compensation and a bustling transfer portal, leading to players switching schools at an unprecedented rate. Amidst this, Ohio State football’s Devin Brown stands out as a beacon of loyalty. Brown dismissed the transfer portal rumors on Monday despite being at the center of those talks this offseason. Speaking to the media, he underscored his commitment to the Buckeyes, making it clear that he has no intentions of leaving for the transfer portal.
Devin Brown: Squashed Transfer Portal Rumors
Brown, the presumed backup quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes next season, had some harsh but necessary words for those predicting his transfer from the program.
Brown told the media, “I think people are cowards; I think people have this thought in their own head that I’m gonna leave, and I’m a quitter, but that’s never been me. These people live in their mom’s basement saying something about me, and they don’t know (expletive). Excuse my language, but they don’t know anything. They don’t know who I am, they don’t know who I’ve been, and that’s always who I’ve been.”

A former four-star recruit and the fifth-ranked quarterback in the class of 2022, according to 247Sports, Devin Brown has seen limited action during his time with the Ohio State football program. The presumed starter heading into the 2024 season, the Buckeyes snagged Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard for next fall, jeopardizing Brown’s status. However, head coach Ryan Day expects fierce competition this offseason, especially with Brown doubling his commitment to Ohio State.
Per On3 Sports, Day is excited to see Brown perform this spring, saying, “He’s shown really good leadership. Even coming off the [Cotton Bowl], it’s a little bit disappointing being injured and everything, but he’s rehabbed well, and he’s really done a nice job so far with Mick [Marotti]. Excited to see the spring.”
Ohio State Football: Devin Brown and Will Howard to Compete This Offseason
K-State transfer Will Howard should start under center for the Buckeyes next season. The Buckeyes scooped him up via the transfer portal after he played four seasons in the Big 12. He has thrown for 39 touchdowns against 14 picks across the past two seasons while rushing for 373 yards and 12 scores. The six-foot-four gunslinger will fill the shoes of former starter Kyle McCord after the latter transferred to Syracuse.
However, the Buckeyes expect Howard to have competition in the form of Devin Brown. After not registering a pass attempt as a freshman, Brown went 16 of 28 for 217 yards and two scores last season. He earned the start in the team’s bowl game against the Missouri Tigers but left the contest after just six pass attempts due to injury. He exited with 20 passing yards and no scores or interceptions.
