The Kansas City Chiefs are on top of the NFL world after winning Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. Some of the credit for this should go to Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. However, his effort is not going unrecognized. A star player and executive have both campaigned for him to get promoted.
Tyreek Hill Praises Steve Spagnuolo
Former Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill was one of the first to praise Spagnuolo on social media. Hill went on to publicly say that Spagnuolo should be more than just a defensive coordinator and that he would be a great head coach. Here is Hill’s exact quote:
“Why don’t Spags got no interviews?” -Tyreek Hill
Hill and Spagnuolo were on the Chiefs together for three seasons from 2019-21. They were even able to capture Super Bowl LIV together. It is clear Hill has not forgotten Spagnuolo.
Kevin Demoff Also Gives Spagnuolo Praise
Tyreek Hill was not the only one to praise Spagnuolo for winning Super Bowl LVIII. Los Angeles Rams CEO Kevin Demoff also joined in on this praise. He believes that Spagnuolo deserves another opportunity to be a head coach in the NFL. Here is Demoff’s exact quote:
“It is well past time to see Spags get another head coaching opportunity.
The team & organization he inherited in STL was a mess, nobody could have had success. Yet he changed the culture/staff & players believed. An amazing human deserving of the real shot we couldn’t give him.” -Kevin Demoff
Los Angeles Rams History
Spagnuolo was the head coach of the Rams while they were in St. Louis from 2009-11. Unfortunately, it was a dark time in franchise history. In three seasons as head coach, the Rams had a record of just 10-38. That led to Spagnuolo’s demise, and he has not gotten another opportunity to be a permanent head coach since.
To strengthen this point, the Rams did not suddenly start winning after Spagnuolo was let go. The Rams attempted to bring in veteran head coach Jeff Fisher for five years. However, even he could not turn the team around. It took Sean McVay to get this franchise back on track in 2017.
The Rams have shown they are willing to help former staff members become head coaches with other teams. They did something similar by praising Raheem Morris before he accepted the head coach position with the Atlanta Falcons. Who knows if this will help give Spagnuolo a push?
Kansas City Chiefs Moving Forward
For now, it does not look like Spagnuolo is going anywhere. However, he has a good situation with the Chiefs, having won three Super Bowls with them as their defensive coordinator. Plus, he has a chance to be a part of NFL history next season if the Chiefs can win a third straight title. Then, perhaps he will get more consideration to become a head coach in 2025.
