Welcome to part two of the series, where we review the 1st round picks who had their 5th-year options declined. To recap, the 2020 NFL Draft class set a record for the smallest number of players to have their 5th-year options declined since it became a thing in 2011.
We will focus on the next batch of five players who had their 5th-year options declined.
San Francisco 49ers: Javon Kinlaw.
The 49ers declined Javon Kinlaw’s $10.455 million, fully guaranteed option. Kinlaw played every game with 25 tackles, four TFLs, 3.5 sacks, and a 49.6 PFF Grade. He also had nine tackles and two TFLs in three playoff games.
He signed a one-year $7.25 million contract with the New York Jets.
Miami Dolphins: Austin Jackson.
The Dolphins declined Austin Jackson’s $14.175 million, fully guaranteed option. Jackson had a breakout 2023 campaign, playing in 16 games, with eight penalties, four sacks allowed, and a 68.4 PFF Grade. He also had one penalty, one sack allowed, and a 51.7 PFF Grade in the Wild Card.
He signed a 3-year, $36 million contract extension in December.
Jacksonville Jaguars: K’Lavon Chaisson.
The Jaguars declined K’Lavon Chaisson’s $12.141 million, fully guaranteed option. Chaisson played every game with 13 tackles, four TFLs, two sacks, and a 54.7 PFF Grade.He signed a one-year contract worth up to $5 million with the Carolina Panthers.
Minnesota Vikings: Jalen Reagor.
The Vikings declined Jalen Reagor’s $12.987 million, fully guaranteed option. The Vikings released Reagor during roster cuts, and the New England Patriots signed him to their practice squad and later promoted him to the active roster on October 26.
He played 11 games with seven receptions on 23 targets for 138 yards He also had seven kick returns for 221 yards and one kick return touchdown.
He signed a one-year, $1.01 million extension.
Los Angeles Chargers: Kenneth Murray.
The Chargers declined Kenneth Murray’s $12.722 million, fully-guaranteed option. Murray played 15 games with 107 tackles, seven TFLs, three sacks, one interception, four pass deflections, and a 52.9 PFF Grade.
He signed a 2-year, $15.5 million contract with the Tennessee Titans.
Conclusion.
To conclude, two of the five players listed re-signed with the team they played for in 2023, three signed with new teams, three signed one-year deals, and one signed for more than $10 million APY.
