After failing to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional round last season, Stefon Diggs left the Buffalo Bills in the 2024 NFL offseason, finishing a four-year tenure with the team. The wide receiver had a strong impact at the start of his run with the team, but his involvement in the offense decreased as the offense changed over the passing years.
ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler recently wrote an article, weighing on the Diggs-Bills divorce. He said that the divorce “divorce did not come out of nowhere,” adding that a team source told him that the offense “didn’t need him anymore.”
Fowler also noted in his article that the postseason departure of the Bills’ receivers coach Chad Hall in 2022 was a “point of contention” in the relationship. Then the Bills started favoring run-oriented offense over passes, which started speculations about the team not wanting Diggs to be involved. Team sources said the change was more about maximizing the team’s overall personnel.
The insider quoted the Bills personnel source. “‘We still attempted to try to get him the ball. It’s more about philosophy, [Brady and McDermott’s] brand, what’s most effective holistically for the offense. Teams know where you’re going in terms of go-to guys. You have to spread that thing out, have flexibility.’”
Diggs played 66 games with Buffalo, recording 445 catches for 5,372 yards and 37 touchdowns. He had his best season in 2020 when he tallied 127 receptions for 1,535 yards and eight touchdown receptions. Prior to playing with the Bills, Diggs spent five years with the Minnesota Vikings.
Josh Allen also weighs in on Diggs’ departure from Buffalo
Bills quarterback Josh Allen formed a dynamic duo with Stefon Diggs in Buffalo for four years until he and the wide receiver went their separate ways during the last offseason. Diggs signed with the Houston Texans to join CJ Stroud.
On an August episode of the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast, Allen opened up about his time with Diggs and what playing with the wide receiver meant to him.
“Even going back to last year, we had a lot of fun too,” Allen said. “I know that people can say what they want to say but we had a lot of success and a lot of fun doing it on and off the field. We were very much like this. So, I hate how it ended but at some point, everything comes to an end.”
This Sunday, Stefon Diggs will reunite with Josh Allen the Bills, but this time with him on the opposing team as part of the Texans. The game will be held at the NRG Stadium, and both teams will be looking to improve their records to 4-1, with only one team walking out with such.
