Why Pittsburgh Steelers Must Trade Starting Offensive Lineman

The Pittsburgh Steelers are riding high as they have a 3-1 record this early into the season. According to an NFL analysis, though, the team has a better chance of improving by taking offensive tackle Dan Moore Jr. out of the equation.

At this point in time, the Steelers are facing a significant dilemma regarding Moore. Over the past three seasons, he has been a polarizing figure among fans, often criticized despite being a fourth-round pick thrust into a starting role. While his performance improved over time, he remained an average tackle.

However, this season has brought a surprising turn of events. Moore has emerged as one of the team’s standout linemen, showcasing his skills in the early weeks. This unexpected success complicates the team’s future strategy, especially given their efforts to find a replacement.

The Steelers traded up to draft Broderick Jones, anticipated to be their franchise left tackle, but he has primarily played on the right side. Additionally, first-round pick Troy Fautanu is currently injured and viewed as a right tackle.

NFL Analysis Reveals Reason Why Pittsburgh Steelers Must Trade Dan Moore Jr.

Since Moore has been an issue for the Steelers and their fans for quite some time now, there’s an argument for him to be traded. This can be seen in an NFL analysis by Nick Villano for Fansided.

“Well, the season sure isn’t successful because of the offensive line, and Dan Moore Jr. has been a point of contention for Steelers fans (and we assume Steelers brass) for literally years. Broderick Jones has had his share of issues, but he’s still young. Moore has been doing this for three years, and he doesn’t seem to be getting better.

Here’s the thing about offensive linemen, they are always valuable. If someone can be a consistent starter, then he is getting a team something on the trade market. Moore is a controversial figure in the Steel City, but that might not be the case in LA or Green Bay. Moore can go there without the scrutiny, and maybe he’ll be better,” Villano wrote.

Moore’s resurgence poses a challenge for the Steelers as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. While he has proven to be reliable, the team must weigh the risks of allowing him to walk versus investing in him further. If he continues to perform well, he could command a substantial contract, given the scarcity of quality offensive tackles in the NFL.

At the same time, Jones has struggled with consistency, making mental errors and incurring penalties. The Steelers are left with more questions than answers regarding their tackle positions. Choosing to retain Moore could mean paying a premium, but losing him might jeopardize the investments made in improving the offensive line. This conundrum will have significant implications for the team’s plans moving forward.
