Reports emerged on Sunday that the Kansas City Chiefs had some level of interest in signing free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz as a potential backup for superstar QB and reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes. Well, as it turns out, those rumors might not have any basis.

According to a report by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, “there was some dialogue” between the Chiefs and Carson’s camp this summer. This is after the Ex-Pro Bowl quarterback was released by the Washington Commanders in February. After a disappointing 2022 campaign, Wentz found himself on the outside looking in, with the Commanders ultimately deciding to pull the plug on the botched Carson Wentz experiment after just two years.
For their part, the “Chiefs were fairly receptive to that idea” of bringing in the highly-experienced Wentz as a potential QB2 behind Patrick Mahomes. The two-time All-Pro quarterback, who is coming off his second Super Bowl win, is still Kansas City’s cornerstone superstar for the years to come, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to add a tested QB behind him as a backup.
NFL Rumors: Chiefs Have No Room for Carson Wentz
As it turns out, however, the Chiefs seem to have no interest in bringing in Carson Wentz ahead of the new season. Blaine Gabbert appears to have firmly established himself as the QB2 behind Mahomes, and according to Mike Florio of PFT, Kansas City is happy with its current depth chart at the quarterback position:
“Despite social media chatter from at least one Dov-bot account suggesting that Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reported that the Chiefs have some degree of interest in the free-agent quarterback (we have no idea whether he actually reported that; it’s not on his Twitter page), we’re told that the Chiefs are inclined to enter the season with only two quarterbacks on the roster,” Florio wrote.
There is still a lot of interest in Wentz around the league, and given his resume, he should be able to find a new home sooner rather than later. That just won’t be in Kansas City.
