The New England Patriots are heading into a re-structuring period after 6-time Super Bowl champion Head Coach Bill Belichick parted ways with the team. Belichick was in New England for 24 years, but a stretch of consecutive unsuccessful seasons ultimately made this choice final. The Patriots will now look to rebuild what Belichick started under new Head Coach and former linebacker Jerod Mayo.
Patriots Starting Quarterback Position is up for Grabs for 2024-25 NFL Season
New England is also looking for a new quarterback. Mac Jones, who the Patriots drafted in the first round a few years ago has not established himself as the number one option and has been benched on multiple occasions for Bailey Zappe. They currently hold the number 3 pick in this year’s draft, but one NFL draft analyst believes that New England will go in a different direction with their selection.
NFL Draft Analyst Daniel Jeremiah Believes Patriots Will Take Marvin Harrison Jr with 3rd Pick
In NFL Media’s second version of their mock draft, Daniel Jeremiah believes that New England will pass on a quarterback and take Marvin Harrison Jr with the 3rd overall pick. Harrison is coming into the draft as one of the best wide receiver prospects of all time. He has the third most touchdowns by a wide receiver in Ohio State history and his father, Marvin Harrison is in the Hall of Fame as a wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts.
Harrison is a generational talent and the Patriots are in need of an elite pass catcher. There are plenty of veteran quarterbacks in free agency including Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield, Russell Wilson and others that can step in and produce at a high level. So, drafting a quarterback is not a requirement.
If Patriots Select Marvin Harrison Jr, They Will Pass on a Top 3 Quarterback
In this scenario, New England would most likely be passing on LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. Who won the Heisman trophy in 2023 due to his productive season. The other two quarterbacks in Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are projected to be selected with the first 2 picks in this year’s draft.
Despite the accolades, Harrison is ranked as the number 1 prospect in his class and has recorded back-to-back seasons of 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns at Ohio State. While Daniels could still be an option for the Patriots moving forward, Harrison has proven consistency in his college career and drafting him would give the Patriots a much-needed boost in the pass game.
