It is official now, that New England Patriots star special teams player Matthew Slater has retired after a career full of accomplishments. He is one of if not the last of the Patriot players from the dynasty era that is now officially calling it a career. Many legends from the team and his old coach Bill Belichick chimed in on how special of a man and player Slater has been in his career. Now owner Robert Kraft has made his official statements as well.
New England Patriots Owner Comments On Stars Retirement
Slater was with the team for his entire 16 year career after he was drafted in the 5th round. He won 3 Super Bowls with the team, made it to 10 pro bowls, and was selected 8 times to the All Pro team. Truly a ‘special’ special teams player and was a crucial captain of the team during the greatest dynasty of all time. After Slater announced retirement, Patriots owner Robert Kraft released a statement of his own.
“Matthew Slater wasn’t just a special teams player for the Patriots,” Kraft said. “He was a special team player who helped us win three Super Bowls and made a positive impact on the many lives he touched, both on and off the field.”
Kraft had only glowing words for Slater continuing by saying:
(He is a) “role model” and “a man of integrity and high moral character who is led by his faith and committed to his family.”
Is Matthew Slater A Future Hall Of Famer?
Slater is known as one of the greatest Patriots of all time, and he will almost certainly be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. The question is whether or not he will make it to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Making it to 8 All Pro teams and winning 3 Super Bowls is certainly the resume of a Hall pf Fame player. If he were to be inducted, he would join his father Jackie in Canton. Slater should have the opportunity to make the Hall as he has been one of the best at his position to ever play the game.
Jackie Slater was a star offensive lineman for the Rams, making multiple Pro Bowls and All-Pro teams as his son did in his career. Slater will retire as one of the greatest special teams players of all time. We’ll see if he’s recognized with the game’s greatest honor when he becomes eligible in five years.
