The New York Jets made one of the largest trades of the NFL offseason when they acquired disgruntled two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Haason Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles. New York gave up a conditional third-round pick that could turn into a second-round pick in order to acquire the Second Team All-Pro.
The Eagles, of course, traded Reddick because he wanted more than the $14.5 million he is set to make this season, which is the last year of his deal. When the Jets acquired Reddick, many assumed that they would give him the contract extension he is looking for. As many fans are aware, that did not happen.
Haason Reddick Has Not Attended Any New York Jets Activities
While many assumed that the Jets and Reddick would work out a deal soon after the trade, the reality is that they have been far apart on their contract discussions. As a result, the two-time Pro Bowl linebackers has decided to skip every Jets team activity.
While there were no penalties for this during voluntary OTA’s, Reddick has been fined for every day that he has missed of mandatory minicamp and of training camp. While the amount that he was fined for missing the two days of mandatory minicamp has not been made public, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers told reporters that he was fined “a lot more” than the recommended amount for going to Egypt.
Under the new collective bargaining agreement, NFL teams are not allowed to waive fines for players that are holding out. Because of this Reddick has accrued fines of $50,000 for each day that he has missed. Combine with the amount he was fined for skipping mandatory minicamp, Reddick is up to over $1 million in fines from the Jets.
Haason Reddick Has Requested a Trade Away from the New York Jets
Earlier today, it was reported that Reddick had requested a trade away from the Jets. The move comes with the 2024 NFL regular season just about a month away and preseason games already having been played.
The Jets defense is flush with defensive talent, so acquiring Reddick in the first place was not necessarily a move that they needed to make. However, he is coming off of two consecutive Pro Bowl seasons with the Eagles that saw him rack up 27.0 sacks.
In 2022, his first season in Philadelphia, Reddick had 16.0 sacks and an NFL-leading five forced fumbles.
Reddick has four-consecutive seasons of double-digit sacks and a total of 58.0 for his career.
But if he thinks the Jets are just going to let him go because he is being difficult, he is sorely mistaken.
New York Jets General Manager Joe Douglas Fires Back at Haason Reddick Trade Request
In a statement released by the team, Jets general manager Joe Douglas sent a blunt message to Reddick. In short, New York will not be trading him:
— New York Jets (@nyjets) August 12, 2024
“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report. Since the trade discussions back in March we have been clear, direct and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”
The ball is back in Reddick’s court now. Either he plays in 2024 and gets paid the salary in his contract, accepts what New York is offering, or sits out the entire year and makes nothing.
